Cafe Scientifique - May 8 - Foraging
Our Cafe Scientifique is an informal gathering of people to discuss current science, conservation and environmental issues that affect our communities. On the second Monday of each month, we will discuss a different topic related to biology, conservation, wilderness and our place in the environment.
On Monday May 8, 2017, our Cafe Scientifique will feature our guest speakers and expert foragers Amber Westfall of the Wild Garden and Monica Chappell from Hidden Harvest will discuss foraging. Foraging for wild food is a fun and nutritious way to incorporate a wider diversity of local food into the diet, but as the foraging trend grows in popularity, what does this mean for wild plant populations and the ecosystems they inhabit? As foragers what are our responsibilities to the plants and their habitats? Amber Westfall will discuss the role of the forager as steward, and the ethics of wild gathering plants. Monica Chappell from Hidden Harvest will discuss foraging from beginning to end and the challenges of foraging on land outside your possession.
Meet at the Fox and the Feather Pub and Grill on Elgin st, Ottawa at 7:00pm, order a drink, grab a bite to eat and engage in discussion on foraging and the ethics of foraging.
On Saturday May 13, 2017, join CPAWS-OV and Bryan Dowkes on an introductory course in urban foraging and put your new skills to the test.
