For 40 years, the CPAWS-Ottawa Valley Chapter has worked to promote the establishment and    ecologically-based management of protected areas in eastern Ontario and western Quebec and   beyond.  In addition, we seek to maintain biodiversity linkages across the landscapes between   protected areas.

Please join us and help in this vital effort.

GATINEAU PARK PHOTO CONTEST

Do you have a penchant for photography? Are you a professional, or have you just purchased your first camera? Do you love the natural experience of Gatineau Park?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then CPAWS Ottawa Valleys Gatineau Park Photo Contest is for you!

We are currently seeking beautiful photographs, taken within the park, to display in our upcoming 2011 calendar. Enter your submissions and your photo could be published!

Did you know that Gatineau Park is a park in name only? It is not a legally protected area, despite its ecological richness and vulnerability. CPAWS Ottawa Valley is working to ensure that this special place is preserved for future generations. All proceeds from the calendar will go towards supporting this vital campaign.

Let the world know how much you love Gatineau Park, and truly make a difference!
Email all submissions to gatineauphoto@cpaws.org

Hydro-electric development proposals adjacent to Quetico Park

Hydro-electric projects have been proposed along the Namakan River, which forms the western boundary of Quetico Park in northwestern Ontario, as well as a key ecological link between Quetico and nearby Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota. Such industrial development will have a profound effect upon the ecological integrity of the Namakan ecosystem and the entire Quetico-Superior wilderness area, and will set a precedent for industrial development adjacent to other parks across Ontario.

A draft Environmental Report for the first project at High Falls was recently submitted by the developer, Ojibway Power and Energy Group, and is currently under review.

For more information on the impact of Namakan projects, and how to make your views known, visit our Namakan hydro page and the website of the Quetico Foundation (www.queticofoundation.org).
