Paid Internship Opportunity: Madawaska Highlands (Hautes-terres de la Madawaska) Conservation Coordinator
Job description
The Madawaska Highlands Conservation Coordinator will develop and deliver research, engagement, and outreach activities focused on the eventual establishment of one or more new protected areas in the Madawaska Highlands region of eastern Ontario. The Madawaska Highlands represent one of the last remaining opportunities to establish significant protected areas south of Algonquin Park.
Responsibilities
- Promote the work, positions, and strategic directions of CPAWS Ottawa Valley in the community.
- Research and develop a comprehensive report on the current state of conservation in the Madawaska Highlands area, including the effectiveness of existing parks and protected areas and an analysis of past conservation processes, including sites in the region identified during the Lands for Life and Ontario’s Living Legacy initiatives. This report should also analyze the conservation potential of areas outside the current parks and protected areas with a view to identify sites of interest for conservation or connectivity.
- Lead a Madawaska Highlands region-wide stakeholder analysis to gauge interest, likely support and likely opposition to additional conservation measures in the region. Draft a report to the intention of CPAWS Ottawa Valley based on the results of the stakeholder analysis process with recommendations.
- Deploy communications and engagement strategies, in partnership with the CPAWS Ottawa Valley Communications Coordinator to raise awareness of the conservation opportunities associated with the Madawaska Highlands among current and prospective CPAWS Ottawa Valley supporters, residents of the Madawaska Highlands area and the wider CPAWS Ottawa Valley region of influence.
- Develop and maintain networks and relationships with people and organizations, in the region, that align with campaign and organisational objectives.
- Collaborate with CPAWS Ottawa Valley colleagues to assist with fundraising efforts.
- Prepare monthly project progress and performance reports.
- Other duties determined by the Conservation Director from time to time.
Key Selection Criteria
Essential
- A combination of education and work experience in a field relevant to the position, including, but not limited to biology, forestry, ecology, communications and public relations, etc.
- Experience working with diverse sectors/interest groups to develop and promote shared objectives.
- Experience conducting research, including a review of literature, reports, scientific papers and other documents and sources of data.
- Demonstrated project development, campaign planning and project management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal English-language communication skills, bilingualism would be considered a significant asset.
- Ability to work effectively and autonomously as part of a geographically dispersed team to develop and deliver shared projects.
- Willingness to travel to the Madawaska Highlands region for occasional in-person meetings.
- Detailed understanding of conservation science and land-use policy, strong understanding of policy and decision-making structures in place in the province of Ontario.
- Experience working with an environmental NGO.
Location: Location in the vicinity of the National Capital Region. CPAWS-OV supports decentralised working arrangements, with occasional and mandatory in-person meetings and events at the organization’s offices in Gatineau, Quebec.
Salary and benefits:
This is a paid internship. Hourly rate is $22.00 for a 35 hour work week.
