Position: Road Ecology Research Coordinator
Start date: May 4th,2026 (flexible start date)
End date: August 28th, 2026
Location: Research site – Highway 17 between Rolphton and Deux-Rivières, Ontario. Mileage reimbursed at CPAWS approved rate of $0.73/km. Option to work remotely when not in the field. Expected to attend in-person at Gatineau Office for team meetings approximately 4 times during the placement. For those residing outside the study area, CPAWS-OV may be able to provide assistance in finding accommodation in the Deep River area.
Hours and pay: 20$/h for 37.5 h/week
Job Description
The current positions falls under our “Algonquin-Dumoine Connection” campaign, an effort to create an ecological corridor between Algonquin Provincial Park and the Dumoine Aquatic Reserve (an area of 1776km2 protected in 2008 thanks to the work of CPAWS). At its shortest distance, only 18km separate the two protected areas. The largest barrier preventing wildlife from roaming between the two areas is Highway 17.
In an attempt to identify wildlife mortality hotspots and implement mitigation measures, CPAWS-OV is conducting a road ecology study along Highway 17. With the help of the Manager of Ontario Conservation Projects, the successful candidate will coordinate the planning and implementation of the road ecology study. The project will utilize citizen science and volunteers to help with the data collection.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Coordinate field research activities of contractors and volunteers
Organize and help lead educational events on the project to increase public awareness and engage volunteers
Participate in field work activities and the monitoring of wildlife on Highway 17
Collect data in an organized and efficient manner
Help recruit and engage volunteers
Work with our Communications and Outreach Coordinator to create social media content and newsletters related to the project
Analyze data and create maps using GIS
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Highly organized and motivated individual
Knowledge on ecological corridors and road ecology
Strong communication skills, including written and oral
Species identification skills, primarily of mammals, amphibians, and reptiles
Ability and familiarity using GIS (primarily QGIS), Microsoft Excel, and iNaturalist
Experience with managing volunteers is considered an asset
Access to a vehicle and a valid G class license are considered assets
